How will custom orthotics help my foot problems?

A custom foot orthotic is made to specifically address structural or functional foot conditions. Made from a three-dimensional representation of your foot, it is a removable device that can be transferred between different pairs of shoes.

At Rocky Mountain Prosthetics & Orthotics, our licensed staff are skilled at designing customized foot orthotics. They will conduct a full biomechanical assessment and gait analysis of your feet. After diagnosing your specific foot issues, they will create a custom-made orthotic.

The orthotic works to help realign your foot and alleviate painful symptoms. This process usually takes some time and does not happen immediately. However, you should feel a gradual decrease in your symptoms within a month.

3 signs you may need custom foot orthotics from this Cranbrook-based orthotic clinic

Many of us take our feet for granted. It’s when you start experiencing pain and discomfort that you realize just how important your feet are. Here’s the top three signs that you may need custom foot orthotics:

  1. Pain. This is an obvious symptom, but one that many people often ignore. Ill-fitting shoes or wearing high heels is often blamed instead. Any kind of foot or heel pain is not normal and should be investigated by a professional.

  2. Standing for long periods of time. Many jobs require standing throughout the day, adding stress to your feet. Over time, this can cause painful conditions such as plantar fasciitis and other symptoms.

  3. Having a very high or low arch. Feet come in all shapes and sizes. Standard shoes often don’t provide enough support if you have high or low foot arches.

If you’re experiencing pain, discomfort or tenderness in your feet, it may be time to book an appointment with a professional. Rocky Mountain Prosthetics & Orthotics in Cranbrook can help you regain your quality of life and live pain-free.

The certified staff at Rocky Mountain Prosthetics & Orthotics will fit and help you learn how to use your new prosthesis

At Rocky Mountain Prosthetics & Orthotics, we understand how difficult and life-changing it is to lose a limb and adjust to a new, prosthetic version. The owner of the company, Kees Beek, has over 33 years of clinical experience as a certified prosthetist and orthotist. We treat our clientele with the utmost understanding and compassion.

In order to properly fit a prosthetic device, our professional staff will make a cast of the limb. A compression sleeve or sock is used to help shape the skin and tissue. The casting process itself is very similar to getting a dental impression and will enable technicians to create a perfectly customized prosthetic device.

During the first initial fittings, your prosthetist will guide you through the basic principles of using your prosthesis, fine-tuning the fit and alignment as needed. For lower limb amputees, more extensive training—such as walking on different terrains, climbing stairs and getting in and out of a car—is provided by a physical therapist. If you have an upper limb prosthesis, an occupational therapist will help you to master daily living activities such as grooming, eating and handling various objects.
