What types of tile flooring does Nufloors Castlegar carry?

Tile is ideal for entryways, kitchens, mudrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms and commercial properties. We carry four main types of tile, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:

• Porcelain tile: Porcelain tile is the hardest, densest tile available. It's available glazed or unglazed. Porcelain is stain-resistant and offers through-body colour options (making chips less noticeable). It comes at a higher price than ceramic tile, but some porcelain tiles are even suitable for outdoor use.

• Unglazed ceramic tile: Unglazed ceramic tiles are very slip-resistant, making them perfect for spaces that are prone to water spillage. Like all ceramic tiles, they can chip (revealing a different colour underneath, unlike through-body colour porcelain tiles). These tiles do not offer stain protection like glazed tiles and require sealing to resist staining.

• Glazed ceramic tile: Ceramic glazed tile has a coating of glass applied to its surface, making it smooth and preventing staining and scratches. This option is available in glossy or matte finishes, and is more affordable than porcelain.

• Glass tile: Glass tiles are a popular and stunning choice for any home. Unlike the other types, glass tile is not recommended for flooring. We use it in kitchens (backsplashes), bathrooms (showers) and accent walls in any room. Installation of glass tile is not recommended for DIY, as it requires a special skill set—let our team do all the work.

I’m considering having a tile floor installed. What factors should I think about?

• Preparation for tile flooring installation: Depending on the existing floor covering, this could be an additional expense if removal of your old flooring is required. Also depending on the condition of your subfloor, additional work may be needed.

• Grout lines: Using larger sized tiles in a small room requires fewer grout lines and visually makes the space seem larger. If choosing a small tile size, the grout lines could make the floor look too busy.

• In-floor heating: Consider installing an in-floor heating system when your tile flooring is being installed. In-floor heating is considered a premium heating method, and it will add to the comfort and the resale value of your home.

• Chipping: Tile floors can get chipped or cracked if something heavy is dropped on them. The repair would likely require the skills of a professional tile installer. Always keep an extra box of your tiles for this purpose.

• Temperature: Tile flooring can be cold in the winter months (consider in-floor heating), and it feels cold to touch in the summer.

• Sound dampening: Tile floors will not dampen the sound in a room. It has no insulation properties and therefore it does not soften the ambiance in a room as carpet does. However, adding an area rug/runners will help solve the issue. We have an impressive selection of area rugs in our showroom.

Some types are better suited for homes with pets or high-traffic areas, and stain resistance or ease of cleaning is another important factor.

• Hardwood flooring: Genuine hardwood is real wood through and through. It adds beauty, quality and value to your home. We carry solid, engineered and hybrid hardwood.

• Luxury vinyl flooring: Available in tile or plank forms, luxury vinyl flooring is easy to clean, soft underfoot and available in waterproof and pet-friendly options.

• Traditional and fibreglass sheet vinyl flooring: Sheet vinyl floors come in one large roll and are perfect for those high-moisture and high-traffic areas in your home.

• Natural stone flooring: Natural stone brings natural colours and textures to your home. It adds quality and warmth to a room that’s not possible with any other material. We carry slate, travertine, marble, granite, sandstone and limestone selections.

• Laminate flooring: Laminate flooring is a pet-friendly, durable floor that is easy to maintain and affordable. Laminate floors are produced with such realistic visuals that it can be difficult to tell if it’s laminate, hardwood, tile or stone and is perfect for active households.

• Cork flooring: Cork floors have long been cherished for their striking looks, natural warmth and eco-friendly attributes. Not a single tree is cut down in the making of cork flooring.
